Here at Valvoline, we’re grateful for our military and active responders who serve our country and we’re proud to have several heroes under our own roof. Mike Mackley is a Service Center Manager for Valvoline and served in the U.S. Navy for three years. Read on to learn what inspired Mike to serve, his memories from the Navy, and what he does as a Valvoline Service Center Manager in Texas.

Where did you serve?

U.S. Navy. E-1. CVN-71 was my ship’s number, the Theodore Roosevelt. Our motto was “Walk Tall, Carry A Big Stick.” We made port in Cape Town, South Africa and laid anchor in the Gulf of Oman.

Why did you decide to serve?

I had many family members that served. Seeing their pride and honor inspired me. Plus, short of backpacking, how else can you see the world and get paid to do so?

Tell us about your role at Valvoline.

I was recently promoted to Service Center Manager in Marshall, TX, and I have worked for five locations so far. I have found what I love to do, and I hope to have my own service center in the near future.

What advice do you have for those considering serving?

Be open-minded. It’s not all like what they show you on TV. And always remember, once you serve your country, your family grows substantially. After 10 years, I still keep up with my shipmates.

What’s one thing about your service that most people don’t know?

I did spend a little time in the brig, but I wouldn’t trade what I experienced and learned while I was in the Navy for anything. It’s what made me the man I am today.

Who are your American heroes?

My grandfather, Pete Hutton, Air Force. And my cousin, Matt Hutton, U.S. Navy.

When you’re not serving or working at Valvoline, what are your hobbies?

I love to play games with friends across the U.S. and the world on my PlayStation. I also help my wife, who is disabled. I guess you could say I work two jobs.

What was your most rewarding experience while serving?

To learn about different aspects of the world and learn who I am inside.

Since you work for Valvoline, we have to ask, what's your dream car?

A ‘97-‘99 Mitsubishi 3000GT. If I could own one, it would make my world. I think I would even cry. I love the way they look and sound, and I want to customize one myself.
