Car naming is one of those topics that gets mixed reactions. While to some its silliness is comparable to a that of a puppy party, to others it’s almost as basic as naming a pet. Growing up Hispanic, our cars were a part of our family. We knew our old man’s dedication to his car went beyond his passion for DIY; he did it with the idea that we’d be behind its wheel one day. This type of commitment made our family cars so much more, and the importance that comes along with naming something just fit. When you name a car, the result is a personification that demands more care, more dedication, and the desire to make it last for miles and miles.
We polled our Facebook community and selected a few drivers and their rides. Each one has a story, and of course, a name.
NGHTMR’s owner, Rigo F. bought it for a mere $400 from one of his best friends after moving back home. Having just studied Automotive Technology at Universal Technical Institute, he was the perfect guy to bring this 1989 Ford Mustang 5.0 back to life. Though it may have been a nightmare to bring back to life, an experience that earned it its formal name, NGHTMR sure is livin’ the California dream now.
2016 F150 Lariat FX4 Sport owner Jose G. named his pride and joy, Eleanor, after one of his college professors who he describes as a “Ford loving gal,” and added “the Ecobeast” in honor of its 3.5 liter V6 Ecoboost engine. The truck is quite the sight— intimidating even; Jose gets a laugh or two on the road as people hesitate to pass him in fear of him being an undercover State Patrol vehicle.

Andrei N. is the artist behind the wheel of a 1973 Volkswagen Beetle that is basically his spirit animal. The VW is bright, vintage, and named after Vincent Van Gogh’s hair. Vincent was part of a bigger collection owned by a man named Robert who agreed to sell the vehicle to Andrei on the condition that it would still be running in 10 years! Sure enough, thanks to Andrei’s commitment to Vincent, this vintage classic that he bought for $3k is now valued at $10k. Good art never dies.
